Common Problem
Poor Cake Release
When filter cake sticks to the cloth, cycle times increase, manual scraping causes damage, and product is lost. Engineered fabric surfaces and coatings enable clean, automated discharge.
The Problem
Cake release — the ability of the filter cake to detach cleanly from the filter cloth after filtration — is one of the most critical performance factors in industrial filtration. Poor cake release leads to residual product stuck on the fabric surface, requiring manual scraping, water washing, or extended blow-off cycles.
In filter presses, sticky cake means plates cannot be opened cleanly, extending cycle time by minutes per plate. In vacuum filters and centrifuges, incomplete discharge reduces yield and contaminates the next batch. For pharmaceutical applications, product residue on the cloth is a direct batch loss and a GMP concern.
The root cause is almost always a fabric surface that is too rough, too porous, or chemically incompatible with the slurry. The right fabric construction and surface treatment eliminates the problem.
Typical Causes
- Multifilament weave traps particles in the yarn texture, creating mechanical adhesion
- High surface energy of untreated polymer fabrics attracts sticky or oily solids
- Insufficient air blow or membrane squeeze pressure during discharge
- Chemical interaction between filter cake and fabric material
- Compressible solids (biological sludge, hydroxides) penetrate the fabric surface
- Worn or aged cloth with degraded surface properties
The R+F Solution
We engineer filter fabrics specifically for clean cake release — through material selection, weave design, and surface treatment.
Anti-Stick Surface Coatings
PTFE and silicone-based coatings reduce surface energy, preventing adhesion of sticky solids. The cake slides off cleanly without mechanical or manual assistance.
Monofilament Weave Design
Smooth monofilament yarn surfaces eliminate the micro-texture that traps particles. A polished fabric face ensures minimal contact area between cake and cloth.
Satin Weave Construction
Long-float satin weaves present a smooth discharge side with minimal crossover points. Ideal for fine, sticky crystals and pharmaceutical filter cakes.
Calendered Finish
Heat-calendering compresses the fabric surface, closing micro-pores and creating a smooth, dense release face. Particularly effective for clay and pigment filtration.
Material Matching
We match fabric polymer (PP, PE, PA, PTFE) to your process chemistry. The right material avoids chemical adhesion and ensures long-term release performance.
Application-Specific Testing
R+F provides test cloths for your specific slurry. We measure adhesion force and cake moisture to validate release performance before full-scale supply.
